Valencia 1-2 Newcastle

The Matthias Jaissle era got underway with a comeback win and an impressive bat-shaped trophy following a 2-1 win at 10-man Valencia.

In a game in which the new boss tried out two players in every outfield position, the first change was enforced, the returning Anthony Elanga - who had looked bright - on the end of a horror tackle from home captain Gaya.

Having been stretchered off (and Gaya sent off, following a bit of a pagga) the initial fears were a broken leg.

Luckily, however, it was soon confirmed he was on his feet in the stadium, a victim of nothing more than 'contusion' (that's bruising to you and I).

By this point however Newcastle had long been behind, trailing to a fourth minute long-range strike that debutant Hornicek may have done better with.

There were also debuts for Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Toure, who looked lively.

However, it was Wissa who made the difference, looking sharp, focused and most importantly, clinical, as he scored two second half goals to seal the win for the new boss.
