Newcastle progressed into the third round of the League Cup thanks to a debut goal from Bazoumana Toure and a double from his half-time replacement Harvey Barnes.

However, things were far from plain sailing for the Magpies as the high-flying Championship Baggies made life uncomfortable at a packed St James'.

Despite Newcastle having the majority of the ball, we looked uncertain in defence again and ponderous in attack.

West Brom took the lead midway through the first half when Price converted a free kick from distance, evading a poor wall and beating Jaouen too easily.

Toure equalised before half time, bundling in from close range, but he was withdrawn after an otherwise ineffectual showing.

And his relpacement, super-sub Harvey Barnes, justified Jaissle's decision to hook the goalscorer as he hammered home from a corner just three minutes later.

Lewis Hall conceded another unfortunate penalty, this time for handball, for the visitors to level 15 minutes from time, but just as penalties looked to be looming, Barnes converted again following a Dedic cross to put Newcastle in the draw for the next round where we'll travel to Millwall.

By that point, we could have a new name on the teamsheet, with new signing Nico Gonzalez paraded on the pitch before kickoff - certainly the first time we've officially announced a signing this way for a long time!.
