Newcastle contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on Sunday at St James', unsure how to proceed after a late equaliser and conceding an even later second goal.

Leading courtesy of a 34th minute Nick Woltemade header, which had shades of the infamous 'deesgrace' goal from two years ago after Gabriel threw himself to the floor, Arsenal largely dominated the game.

They could have been down to ten men had Woltemade not been so honest as Gabriel pushed an elbow into his jaw, contenting himself with refusing an insincere apology rather than throwing himself to the ground.

However, as Newcastle dropped deeper and deeper and conceded a concerning number of corners, the pressure told in the 84th minute as Arsenal deservedly drew level.

Seeming to throw caution to the wind, rather than accept what would have been a more-than-decent point against a good team, we were caught by a late sucker punch from old boy Mikel Merino, Pope unfortunately caught wandering after having a stellar game up to that point.

So the season is still to fully get going, but defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal aren't anything to panic about in isolation.

Losing today in the 96th minute and that not being the latest goal we've conceded, however, maybe speaks to something more concerning.
