League Cup holders Newcastle progressed to the quarter finals, and a home draw against Fulham, after a team with eight changes from the weekend comfortably dealt with a poor Spurs side.

With only Burn, Thiaw and Woltemade keeping their places, a disjointed performance would have been understandable, but there was no hint of it, and in fact a midfield of Tonali, Willock and Ramsey performed better than the usual Tonali/Big Joe/Bruno combination has been recently.

There were good performances all over the park, but Schar in particularly seemed particularly keen to remind Eddie Howe of his qualities, rising unmarked to power in a great header from a Tonali corner midway through the first half.

This came amid much hilarity as Djed Spence decided to have a sit down to sort his laces out whilst out of position as we waited to take the corner, then stroll into the box as Richarlison sternly instructed the referee to wait.

Tonali, rightly so, was having none of that, and pinged the ball right on Schar's handsome bonce, Spurs seemingly indulging in a peaceful protest at the injustice of letting us actually take a corner and giving up defending altogether.

Richarlison receiving a booking for berating the referee was a nice bonus, as Schar gave an ear-cupping celebration to the crowd - strange in my eyes, given everybody loves him.

At the other end, Ramsdale had a good game in a rare start, including one eye-catching save down to his left, but we never particularly seemed in great danger.

In attack, Woltemade hadn't scored in two games but was in imperious form, with some sublime touches and perfectly measured through balls.

The icing on the cake though came following a dinked ball into the box from Willock saw Kinsky come blundering out of goal, leaving Big Nick with the simplest of headers to double our lead and seal the win.

On a night of positives, the one possible downside was Elanga's failure to get into the game again - probably the only player not to have a good game.

He'll get there but he needs to start playing to his strengths, and may benefit from having an out-and-out number 9 to play with when Wissa returns.

So we continue our trophy defence, after winning the cup last year, and with some big names left in the draw can consider a home tie against Fulham a kind one.
