A Nick Pope rush of blood to the head ultimately cost Newcastle in a breathtaking end to end encounter in Marseille, having gone in at the break with the lead thanks to another cool Harvey Barnes finish.
The rest of the half, following Barnes's sixth minute goal, was open and even, both sides attacking, but we certainly had chances to increase our advantage.
Instead, immediately following the second half kick off, Nick Pope, for reasons only known to Nick Pope, came charging out of his goal towards Aubameyang in a race he was never going to win - then as Aubemeyang sailed past him, bizarrely started screaming at him.
Undeterred, the ageing striker finished well from a tight angle, and scored again following awful defending just five minutes later.
From there, we still had further chances, but never convincingly looked like taking them.
Our Champions League points return is still more than respectable, but this felt like a missed opportunity, and like so many of our defeats this season, felt entirely of our own making.
