Newcastle dragged themselves into the draw for the FA Cup fourth round with a monumental win on penalties against Eddie Howe's former side, and current bogey team, Bournemouth.

After a promising performance saw a strong Newcastle leading on the hour mark, two quickfire goals from Bournemouth looked to have us going out of the FA Cup at the first time of asking.

However, substitute Tonali burst through the middle in the 95th minute, rounding the keeper and leaving a trailing leg out to be taken, with a penalty awarded.

Saw whatever you want about Anthony Gordon but his record with pressure penalties is fantastic, and he duly dispatched to take the tie to an extra 30 minutes that we could scarcely afford.

Having gone to extra time, it felt like not winning would have been a disastrous worst of both worlds - extra football and an early exit - but following on from his midweek heroics, Harvey Barnes stepped up once again to nod home in the 118th minute to surely seal the win.

However, there was still time in the 122nd minute for some bewildering defending (or lack thereof) from Newcastle, none of Botman, Thiaw or Ramsdale taking control of Marcus Tavernier strolling into the box and he duly stroked the ball home for penalties.

After Gordon once again scored an important penalty (stepping up first for the team), Woltemade smacked the bar and Bruno stuttered and saw his weak penalty saved.

Thankfully, these misses sandwiched a good save from Evanilson by Ramsdale.

From there, Tonali scored before Ramsdale saved another and we were effectively into sudden death.

There followed successful penalty conversions for Newcastle from Joelinton, Hall, Miley, Barnes and Thiaw, with Bournemouth scoring all of theirs.

When Diakite stepped up to take Bournemouth's ninth penalty, Ramsdale pushed it around the post to bring an epic encounter to a positive end.

A draining game that saw our back line further depleted with Tino succumbing to a hamstring injury (and set for two months on the sidelines) gave us scant reward in the form of a trip to Villa Park in the fourth round.

A win's a win, however, and only the small matter of Man City in the defence of our League Cup in the semi final first leg on Tuesday.
